Proposes that emotional intelligence (Ei) enables teams to boost their performance. Looks at five Ei team competencies which build on individual Ei skills. These are inclusiveness, adaptability, assertiveness, empathy, and influence. However, these competencies are not enough on their own. There also has to be “a bridge of intent” where each member of the team commits to increasing his or her self‐understanding. In this respect Ei is not a static skill but becomes the way the team does business. Concludes that those teams which develop their Ei are likely to have far more initiative in dealing with organisational challenges, will be far better at addressing ongoing concerns such as stress, change and conflict and will genuinely get more out of work.
