Abstract

Describes why modern engineering plastics have supplanted or superseded traditional materials such as wood and metal in a wide range of applications and in particular in wear‐part or bearing applications. States that the most important factor in choosing plastic bearings is their ability to withstand wide variations in load over a long period of time, yet operate with very good reliability despite an unpredictable maintenance routine; the so called “fit and forget” ability. Discusses in depth the application of composite materials in the production of bearings for off‐shore and marine use including rudder bearings, steering gear support and stern tube bearings.
