Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review recent reports on mechanical properties of Sn-Bi and Sn-Bi-X solders (where X is an additional alloying element), in terms of the tensile properties, hardness and shear strength. Then, the effects of alloying in Sn-Bi solder are compared in terms of the discussed mechanical properties. The fracture morphologies of tensile shear tested solders are also reviewed to correlate the microstructural changes with mechanical properties of Sn-Bi-X solder alloys.

Design/methodology/approach

A brief introduction on Sn-Bi solder and reasons to enhance the mechanical properties of Sn-Bi solder. The latest reports on Sn-Bi and Sn-Bi-X solders are combined in the form of tables and figures for each section. The presented data are discussed by comparing the testing method, technical setup, specimen dimension and alloying element weight percentage, which affect the mechanical properties of Sn-Bi solder.

Findings

The addition of alloying elements could enhance the tensile properties, hardness and/or shear strength of Sn-Bi solder for low-temperature solder application. Different weight percentage alloying elements affect differently on Sn-Bi solder mechanical properties.

Originality/value

This paper provides a compilation of latest report on tensile properties, hardness, shear strength and deformation of Sn-Bi and Sn-Bi-X solders and the latest trends and in-depth understanding of the effect of alloying elements in Sn-Bi solder mechanical properties.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present comprehensive nonlinear material modelling techniques and simulations of reinforced concrete (RC) beams subjected to short-term monotonic static load using the robust and reliable general-purpose finite element (FE) software ANSYS. A parametric study is carried out to analyse the flexural and ductility behaviour of RC beams under various influencing parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

To develop and validate the numerical FE models, a total of four experimentally tested simply supported RC beams are taken from the available literature and two beams are selected from each author. The concrete, steel reinforcements, bond-slip mechanism, loading and supporting plates are modelled using SOLID65, LINK180, COMBIN39 and SOLID185 elements, respectively. The validated models are then used to conduct parametric FE analysis to investigate the effect of concrete compressive strength, percentage of tensile reinforcement, compression reinforcement ratio, transverse shear reinforcement, bond-slip mechanism, concrete compressive stress-strain constitutive models, beam symmetry and varying overall depth of beam on the ultimate load-carrying capacity and ductility behaviour of RC beams.

Findings

The developed three-dimensional FE models can able to capture the load and midspan deflections at critical points, the accurate yield point of steel reinforcements, the formation of initial and progressive concrete crack patterns and the complete load-deflection curves of RC beams up to ultimate failure. From the numerical results, it can be concluded that the FE model considering the bond-slip effect with Thorenfeldt’s concrete compressive stress-strain model exhibits a better correlation with the experimental data.

Originality/value

The ultimate load and deflection results of validated FE models show a maximum deviation of less than 10% and 15%, respectively, as compared to the experimental results. The developed model is also capable of capturing concrete failure modes accurately. Overall, the FE analysis results were found quite acceptable and compared well with the experimental data at all loading stages. It is suggested that the proposed FE model is a practical and reliable tool for analyzing the flexural behaviour of RC members and can be used for performing parametric studies.

Abstract

Purpose

Recently, several studies have been performed on lap welding of aluminum and copper using friction stir welding (FSW). The formation of intermetallic compounds at the weld interface hampers the weld quality. The use of an intermediate layer of a compatible material during welding reduces the formation of intermetallic compounds. The purpose of this paper is to optimize the FSW process parameters for AA6063-ETP copper weld, using a compatible zinc intermediate filler metal.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present study, a three-level, three-factor central composite design (CCD) has been used to determine the effect of various process parameters, namely, tool rotational speed, tool traverse speed and thickness of inter-filler zinc foil on ultimate tensile strength of the weld. A total of 60 experimental data were fitted in the CCD. The experiments were performed with tool rotational speeds of 1,000, 1,200 and 1,400 rpm each of them with tool traverse speeds of 5, 10 and 15 mm/min. A zinc inter-filler foil of 0.2 and 0.4 mm was also used. The macrograph of the weld surface under different process parameters and the tensile strength of the weld have been investigated.

Findings

The feasibility of joining 3 mm thick AA6063-ETP copper using zinc inter-filler is established. The regression analysis showed a good fit of the experimental data to the second-order polynomial model with a coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.9759 and model F-value of 240.33. A good agreement between the prediction model and experimental findings validates the reliability of the developed model. The tool rotational speed, tool traverse speed and thickness of inter-filler zinc foil significantly affected the tensile strength of the weld. The optimal conditions found for the weld were, rotational speed of 1,212.83 rpm and traverse speed of 9.63 mm/min and zinc foil thickness is 0.157 mm; by using optimized values, ultimate tensile strength of 122.87 MPa was achieved, from the desirability function.

Originality/value

Aluminium and copper sheets could be joined feasibly using a zinc inter-filler. The maximum tensile strength of joints formed by inter-filler (122.87 MPa) was significantly better as compared to those without using inter-filler (83.78 MPa). The optimum process parameters to achieve maximum tensile strength were found by CCD.

Abstract

Purpose

The combination of an Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) layer and steel plate to reinforce RC beams (ESRB) is a new strengthening method. The ESRB was proposed based on the steel plate at the bottom of RC beams, aiming to solve the problem of over-reinforced RC beams and improve the bearing capacity of RC beams without affecting their ductility.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the finite element model of ESRB was established by ABAQUS. The results were compared with the experimental results of ESRB in previous studies and the reliability of the finite element model was verified. On this basis, parameters such as the width of the steel plate, thickness of the ECC layer, damage degree of the original beam and cross-sectional area of longitudinal tensile rebar were analyzed by the verified finite element model. Based on the load–deflection curve of ESRB, ESRB was discussed in terms of ultimate bearing capacity and ductility.

Findings

The results demonstrate that when the width of the steel plate increases, the ultimate load of ESRB increases to 133.22 kN by 11.58% as well as the ductility index increases to 2.39. With the increase of the damage degree of the original beam, the ultimate load of ESRB decreases by 23.7%–91.09 kN and the ductility index decreases to 1.90. With the enhancement of the cross-sectional area of longitudinal tensile rebar, the ultimate bearing capacity of ESRB increases to 126.75 kN by 6.2% and the ductility index elevates to 2.30. Finally, a calculation model for predicting the flexural capacity of ESRB is proposed. The calculated results of the model are in line with the experimental results.

Originality/value

Based on the comparative analysis of the test results and numerical simulation results of 11 test beams, this investigation verified the accuracy and reliability of the finite element simulation from the aspects of load–deflection curve, characteristic load and failure mode. Furthermore, based on load–deflection curve, the effects of steel plate width, ECC layer thickness, damage degree of the original beam and cross-sectional area of longitudinal tensile rebar on the ultimate bearing capacity and ductility of ESRB were discussed. Finally, a simplified method was put forward to further verify the effectiveness of ESRB through analytical calculation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the variables of the fused deposition modelling (FDM) process and improve their effect on the mechanical properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) components reinforced with copper microparticles.

Design/methodology/approach

In the experimental approach, after drying the ABS granule, it was mixed with copper microparticles (at concentrations of 5%, 8% and 10%) in a single screw extruder to fabricate pure ABS and composite filaments. Then, by making the components by the FDM process, the tensile strength of the parts was determined through tensile strength tests. Taguchi DOE method was used to design the experiments in which nozzle temperature, filling pattern and layer thickness were the design variables. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) and signal-to-noise analysis were conducted to determine the effectiveness of each FDM process parameter on the ultimate tensile strength of printed samples. Following that, the main effect analysis was used to optimize each process parameter for pure ABS and its composite at different copper contents.

Findings

The study allows the layer thickness and filling pattern had the highest effects on the ultimate tensile strength of the printed materials (pure and composite) in the FDM process. Moreover, the results show that the ultimate tensile strength of the ABS composite containing 5% copper was nearly 12.3% higher than the pure ABS part. According to validation tests, the maximum error of experiments was about 0.96%.

Originality/value

In this paper, the effect of copper microparticles (as filling agent) was investigated on the ultimate tensile strength of printed ABS material during the FDM process.

Abstract

Purpose

This work introduces an integrated artificial intelligence schemes to enhance accurately predicting the mechanical properties of cellulosic fibers towards boosting their reliability for more sustainable industries.

Design/methodology/approach

Fuzzy clustering and stacked method approach were utilized to predict the mechanical performance of the fibers. A reference dataset contains comprehensive information regarding mechanical behavior of the lignocellulosic fibers was compiled from previous experimental investigations on mechanical properties for eight different fiber materials. Data encompass three key factors: Density of 0.9–1.6 g/cm3, Diameter of 5.9–1,000 µm, and Microfibrillar angle of 2–49 deg were utilized. Initially, fuzzy clustering technique was utilized for the data. For validating proposed model, ultimate tensile strength and elongation at break were predicted and then examined against unseen new data that had not been used during model development.

Findings

The output results demonstrated remarkably accurate and highly acceptable predictions results. The error analysis for the proposed method was discussed by using statistical criteria. The stacked model proved to be effective in significantly reducing level of uncertainty in predicting the mechanical properties, thereby enhancing model’s reliability and precision. The study demonstrates the robustness and efficacy of the stacked method in accurately estimating mechanical properties of lignocellulosic fibers, making it a valuable tool for material scientists and engineers in various applications.

Originality/value

Cellulosic fibers are essential for biomaterials to enhance developing green sustainable bio-products. However, such fibers have diverse characteristics according to their types, chemical composition and structure causing inconsistent mechanical performance. This work introduces an integrated artificial intelligence schemes to enhance accurately predicting the mechanical properties of cellulosic fibers towards boosting their reliability for more sustainable industries. Fuzzy clustering and stacked method approach were utilized to predict the mechanical performance of the fibers.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effect different fluxes have on the mechanical properties of lead-free solders, specifically Sn-Zn-Bi solder alloy. The solder billets were soldered in between copper substrates and flux was applied. The mechanical tests carried out on the solder alloys were tensile and shear tests. They were experimented on with different fluxes, namely, water-soluble (paste), rosin mildly activated (RMA) and insoluble (RMA) flux. From these experiments, the ultimate tensile strength, shear strength, elongation, yield stress, Young’s modulus and the stress-strain curve are derived. The results showed that solder billets that were soldered onto copper substrates with water-soluble flux yielded the highest ultimate tensile strength and shear strength values of 9.9961 MPa and 118.836 MPa, respectively. Billets soldered using RMA flux had the highest values of elongation and Young’s modulus, 0.306 mm and 50,257.295 MPa, respectively. However, on viewing the failure of all the specimens under an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM), specimens soldered using water-soluble flux possessed the least deformities, depicting their higher level of mechanical properties, entailing their strength and ductility, deeming them as the most suitable flux for microelectronic applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to characterize mechanical properties (tensile, compressive and flexural) for the three-dimensional printing (3DP) process, using various common recommended infiltrate materials and post-processing conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

A literature review is conducted to assess the information available related to the mechanical properties, as well as the experimental methodologies which have been used when investigating the 3D printing process characteristics. Test samples are designed, and a methodology to measure infiltrate depths is presented. A full factorial experiment is conducted to collect the tensile, compressive and bending forces for a set of infiltrates and build orientations. The impact of the infiltrate type and depth with respect to the observed strength characteristics is evaluated.

Findings

For most brittle materials, the ultimate compression strength is much larger than the ultimate tensile strength, which is shown in this work. Unique stress–strain curves are generated from the infiltrate and build orientation conditions; however, the compressive strength trends are more consistent in behavior compared to the tensile and flexural results. This comprehensive study shows that infiltrates can significantly improve the mechanical characteristics, but performance degradation can also occur, which occurred with the Epsom salts infiltrates.

Research limitations/implications

More experimental research needs to be performed to develop predictive models for design and fabrication optimization. The material-infiltrate performance characteristics vary per build orientation; hence, experimental testing should be performed on intermediate angles, and a double angle experiment set should also be conducted. By conducting multiple test scenarios, it is now understood that this base material-infiltrate combination does not react similar to other materials, and any performance characteristics cannot be easily predicted from just one study.

Practical implications

These results provide a foundation for a process design and post-processing configuration database, and downstream design and optimization models. This research illustrates that there is no “best” solution when considering material costs, processing options, safety issues and strength considerations. This research also shows that specific testing is required for new machine–material–infiltrate combinations to calibrate a performance model.

Originality/value

There is limited published data with respect to the strength characteristics that can be achieved using the 3DP process. No published data with respect to stress–strain curves are available. This research presents tensile, compressive and flexural strength and strain behaviors for a wide variety of infiltrates, and post-processing conditions. A simple, unique process is presented to measure infiltrate depths. The observed behaviors are non-linear and unpredictable.

Abstract

Purpose

The aerospace, energy and automotive industries have seen wide use of composite materials because of their excellent mechanical properties, along with the benefit of weight reduction savings. As such, the purpose of this study is to provide an understanding of the mechanical performance of these materials under extreme operational conditions characteristic of in-service environments.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is novel in that it has evaluated the tensile performance and fracture response of additively manufactured continuous carbon fiber embedded in an onyx matrix (i.e. nylon with chopped carbon fiber) at cryogenic and room temperatures, for specimens manufactured with an angle between the specimen lying plane and the working build plane of 0°, 45° and 90°.

Findings

Research findings reveal enhanced tensile properties (i.e. ultimate tensile strength and modulus of elasticity) by the 0° (X) built specimens, as compared with the 45° (XZ45) and 90° (Z) built specimens at cryogenic temperature. A reduction in ductility is observed at cryogenic temperature for all build orientations. Fractographic analysis reveals the presence of fiber pullout/elongation, pores within the onyx matrix and chopped carbon fiber near fracture zone of the onyx matrix.

Research limitations/implications

Research findings present tensile properties (i.e. ultimate tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and elongation%) for three-dimensional (3D)-printed onyx with and without reinforcing continuous carbon fiber composites at cryogenic and room temperatures. Reinforcement of continuous carbon fibers and reduction to cryogenic temperatures appears to result, in general, in an increase in the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity, with a reduction in elongation% as compared with the onyx matrix tensile performance reported at room temperature. Fracture analysis reveals continuous carbon fiber pull out for onyx–carbon fiber samples tested at room temperature and cryogenic temperatures, suggesting weak onyx matrix–continuous carbon fiber adhesion.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first study to report on the cryogenic tensile properties and fracture response exhibited by 3D-printed onyx–continuous carbon fiber composites. Evaluating the viability of common commercial 3D printing techniques in producing composite parts to withstand cryogenic temperatures is of critical import, for aerospace applications.

Purpose

3D printing is gaining attention in the medical sector for the development of customized solutions for a wide range of applications such as temporary external implants. The materials used for the manufacturing process are critical, as they must provide biocompatibility and adequate mechanical properties. This study aims to evaluate and model the influence of the printing parameters on the mechanical properties of two biocompatible materials.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the mechanical properties of 3D-printed specimens of two biocompatible materials (ABS medical and PLActive) were evaluated. The influence of several printing parameters (infill density, raster angle and layer height) was studied and modelled on three response variables: ultimate tensile strength, deformation at the ultimate tensile strength and Young’s modulus. Therefore, statistical models were developed to predict the mechanical responses based on the selected printing parameters.

Findings

The used methodology allowed obtaining compact models that show good fit, particularly, for both the ultimate tensile strength and Young’s modulus. Regarding the deformation at ultimate tensile strength, this output was found to be influenced by more factors and interactions, resulting in a slightly less precise model. In addition, the influence of the printing parameters was discussed in the work.

Originality/value

The presented paper proposed the use of statistical models to select the printing parameters (infill density, raster angle and layer height) to optimize the mechanical response of external medical aids. The models will help users, researchers and firms to develop optimized solutions that can reduce material costs and printing time but guaranteeing the mechanical response of the parts.
