Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is two-fold: (1) to offer a conceptual understanding of knowledge brokering from a sociometric point-of-view; and (2) to provide an empirical example of this conceptualization in an education context.
Design/methodology/approach
We use social network theory and analysis tools to explore knowledge exchange patterns among a group of teachers, instructional coaches and administrators who are collectively seeking to build increased capacity for effective mathematics instruction. We propose the concept of network activity to measure direct and indirect knowledge brokerage through the use of degree and betweenness centrality measures. Further, we propose network utility—measured by tie multiplexity—as a second key component of effective knowledge brokering.
Findings
Our findings suggest significant increases in both direct and indirect knowledge brokering activity across the network over time. Teachers, in particular, emerge as key knowledge brokers within this networked learning community. Importantly, there is also an increase in the number of resources exchanged through network relationships over time; the most active knowledge brokers in this social ecosystem are those individuals who are exchanging multiple forms of knowledge.
Originality/value
This study focuses on knowledge brokering as it presents itself in the relational patterns among educators within a social ecosystem. While it could be that formal organizational roles may encapsulate knowledge brokering across physical structures with an education system (e.g. between schools and central offices), these individuals are not necessarily the people who are most effectively brokering knowledge across actors within the broader social network.

Abstract
Purpose – This study examines the consequences of sudden influx of medicalized discourse of gender in Japan by introduction of gender identity disorder (GID) in the late 1990s where transgender identities and the LGBT activism have had a different history and meanings from Western societies.
Methodology – I use discourse analysis of autobiographies of people with GID in Japan and the limited studies concerning the history of GID and transgender in Japan.
Findings – The introduction of GID to Japanese society contributed to increased social awareness of transsexual individuals. However, it also resulted in transsexual fundamentalism, which has excluded individuals who do not meet certain rigid medical and social identity criteria. This development reinforces the conventional binary gender norms instead of problematizing them. Furthermore, a legislation strictly based on the diagnosis has produced two groups: transsexual individuals with GID diagnosis who will be legally and socially recognized as legitimate, and those who are not GID and thus undeserving of such recognitions.
Social implications – Diagnosis cannot exist without criteria, therefore it is impossible for GID to function as an inclusive identity category. Therefore, we must seek a system to provide medical services that do not necessitate diagnosis. It is also crucial to nurture the social environment where people can freely choose gender identities and expressions that go beyond conventional binary gender system and to keep insisting on plurality and fluidity of gender so that people do not have to rush for a narrow window of recognition.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the perception, readiness and change involved in the implementation of Education 4.0 within the region of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) among policymakers, enablers (lecturers) and receivers (students), within globalisation, referred here as the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).
Design/methodology/approach
This study used a mixed method research design using quantitative data from a Likert scale of 1–5, involving: (1) Not Ready; (2) Ready; (3) No Sure; (4) Quite Ready and (5) Extremely Ready. Open-ended questions formed the qualitative approach taken by the researchers to uncover the richness of the respondents' perceptions of Education 4.0. The test items reliability index of 0.744 drew quantitative data from the perspective of the educational policymakers, enablers and receivers to reveal their collective definition of each construct (knowledge, industry and humanity).
Findings
This study has exposed the importance of knowing and capturing the interrelated components of an educational ecosystem that exists in higher education (HE) within the ASEAN region. The personal readiness of respondents towards Education 4.0 is very high; yet concern was raised about the financial and managerial readiness of institutions across the region.
Originality/value
This study highlighted the dynamic nature of the HE ecosystem and the connectivity between the elements of Education 4.0 – knowledge, industry and humanity within the ASEAN region.

Abstract
Purpose
For Francis turbine, the vortex flow in the draft tube plays an important role in the safe and efficient operating of hydraulic turbine. The swirling flow produced at the blade trailing edge at off-design conditions has been proved to be the fundamental reason of the vortex flow. Exploring the swirling flow variations in the non-cavitation flow and cavitation flow field is an effective way to explain the mechanism of the complex unsteady flow in the draft tube.
Design/methodology/approach
The swirling flow in different cavitation evolution stages of varying flow rates was studied. The swirl number, which denotes the strength of the swirling flow, was chosen to systematically analyze the swirling flow changes with the cavitation evolutions. The Zwart–Gerber–Blemari cavitation model and SST turbulence model were used to simulate the two-phase cavitating flow. The finite volume method was used to discrete the equations in the unsteady flow field simulation. The Frozen Rotor Stator scheme was used to transfer the data between the rotor-stator interfaces. The inlet total pressure was set to inlet boundary condition and static pressure was set to outlet boundary condition.
Findings
The results prove that the mutual influences exist between the swirling flow and cavitation. The swirling flow was not only affected by the load but also significantly changed with the cavitation development, because the circumferential velocity decrease and axial velocity increase presented with the cavitation evolution. At the high load conditions, the system stability may improve with the decreasing swirling flow strength.
Research limitations/implications
Further experimental and simulation studies still need to verify and estimate the reasonability of the swirling flow seen as the cavitation inception signal.
Originality/value
One interesting finding is that the swirl number began to change as the inception cavitation appeared. This is meaningful for the cavitation controlling in the Francis turbine.
