This paper aims to present a new robustness-based design strategy for thin-walled composite structures under compressive loading, which combines strength requirements in terms of the limit and ultimate load with robustness requirements evaluated from the structural energy until collapse.

In order to assess the structural energy, the area under the load-shortening curve between several characteristic points such as local buckling, global buckling, onset of degradation and collapse load is calculated. In this context, a geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis is carried out, in which the ply properties are selectively degraded by progressive failure.

The advantage of the proposed methodology is observed by analyzing unstiffened composite plates under compressive loading, wherein the lightest plate that satisfies both strength and robustness requirements can be attained.

As a practical implication, this methodology gives a new argument to accept the collapse load close to the ultimate load once robustness is ensured.

The structural energy is employed to investigate the robustness of thin-walled composite structures in postbuckling, and new energy-based robustness measures are proposed. In the design of composite structures, this innovative strategy might lead to a more robust design when compared to an approach that only accounts for the ultimate load.

This innovative strategy embedded in a probabilistic framework might lead to a different design selection when compared to a deterministic approach, or an approach that only accounts for the ultimate load. Moreover, robustness measures are redefined in the context of a probabilistic design.

The purpose of this editorial is two‐fold: first, to provide an overview of team‐related issues in the particular realm of contingent work arrangements, and second, to introduce the collection of articles encompassing this special issue.

The editorial is a general literature review that provides the readers of this special issue with a broader scholarly literature framework. The editorial also provides a historical context of the field. First, the phenomenon of contingent work arrangements is discussed. Second, attention is given to identification of major strategic factors, which have been contributing to the growth of contingent work arrangements. Third, team‐related issues of differentiation, integration, and cooperation are discussed.

The overview of research in the area of contingent work arrangements demonstrates that such work arrangements are diverse in their contractual structure. The rationale for which organizations use contingent work arrangements are diverse, as are the reasons why employees undertake such work outside the scope of the traditional employment model. Research in this area has grown primarily with the focus on economic, legal, and social factors influencing the expansion of non‐standard work arrangements. Less research is found in the area of individual, managerial, and organizational consequences of this expansion.

This editorial – and the special issue in particular – gives attention to understanding the array of experiences associated with contingent workers with the purpose of accumulating theoretical knowledge in this field, but also – and perhaps more importantly – to add to the transition from evidence‐based knowledge to practical advice.

Student interest and learning success is an important component of teaching learning research. However, while the impact of emotions and psychological needs on students' achievements has been a focus of research, the impact of their physiological needs has been under studied. In this explorative study, I examine what impact the physiological and psychological needs of student teachers have on their feelings, motivation, and interest in different learning settings.

The research method used was the daily reconstruction method and included the Felix-App, a new digital research and feedback tool that allows the measurement of feelings, needs, motivation, and interest in real time.

The results suggest the importance of physiological needs for perceived emotions, motivation, and interest in the learning subject. The psychological needs, on the other hand, are of less importance.

The Felix-App is an innovative tool to learn more about learners' emotions and needs in real learning settings. The importance of physiological needs has been known since Maslow, but should be considered much more in the context of teaching and learning research in the future. There is a need for further research on the importance of physical aspects in learning.
