Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to build a predictive model for the investment yield of British banking-halls.

Design/methodology/approach

Empirical data of similar lots sold at previous auctions are subjected to statistical analyses utilizing a cross-sectional research design. The independent variables analysed are taken from a previous study using the same cases. Models are built using logistic regression and ANCOVA.

Findings

Logistic regression generally generates better models than ANCOVA. A division of Britain on a north/south divide produces the best results. Rent is as good as lot size and price in modelling, but has greater utility, because it is known prior to auctions.

Research limitations/implications

Cases analysed were restricted to lots let entirely as banking-halls. Other lots comprising premises only partially used as banking-halls might produce different results. Freehold was the only tenure tested.

Practical implications

The study provides a form of predictive modelling for investors and their advisors using rent which is known in advance of any sale.

Originality/value

The study makes an original contribution to the field, because it builds a predictive model for investment yields for this class of property. Further research may indicate if similar predictive models can be built for other classes of investment property.

Abstract

For various reasons consumers find some innovations undesirable. These are identified as resistant innovations or those innovations that consumers are unable or unwilling to readily embrace, such as screw caps on fine wines, hybrid automobiles and nanotechnology-based products. What makes these types of innovations undesirable to consumers? How should marketers introduce into the marketplace these types of innovations? These questions are the foundation of my ongoing research. In reflecting on my research decisions for the past ten years, I came upon my application for PhD programs. In 1997, I wrote:“The past ten years I have been focused on product development for telecom firms, including five years as an entrepreneur. As I've worked, questions have frequently surfaced about the slow acceptance in the marketplace of some telecommunication offerings; Why has ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) not taken off? Why did 30,000 perfectly functioning Newton PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant) end up at the Los Angeles dump? Did AT&T misjudge the market timing for videophones? What role, if any, did marketing play in these product mis-launches?”…I have explored disruptive technologies with Christensen (1997), crossed the chasm with Moore (1991), searched for the sources of innovation with Von Hippel (1988), and evaluated Roger's diffusion theories (1995) looking for direction. These investigations have led to more questions.

Abstract

Presents the scientific methodology from the enlarged cybernetical perspective that recognizes the anisotropy of time, the probabilistic character of natural laws, and the entry that the incomplete determinism in Nature opens to the occurrence of innovation, growth, organization, teleology communication, control, contest and freedom. The new tier to the methodological edifice that cybernetics provides stands on the earlier tiers, which go back to the Ionians (c. 500 BC). However, the new insights reveal flaws in the earlier tiers, and their removal strengthens the entire edifice. The new concepts of teleological activity and contest allow the clear demarcation of the military sciences as those whose subject matter is teleological activity involving contest. The paramount question “what ought to be done”, outside the empirical realm, is embraced by the scientific methodology. It also embraces the cognitive sciences that ask how the human mind is able to discover, and how the sequence of discoveries might converge to a true description of reality.

When we inhabit time and space, how can foresight be other than a parallax view? Not only is the ground shifting beneath our feet, but our culture colours our perspective. We replace our imagination with computers and program them with data that is often skewed. We begrudge paying our taxes yet offload risk to the public sector. For the environment in particular, the stakes have never been higher. Faith in the future means we all jump together.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to present an approach, able to deal with different models for anisotropy in the finite element method, and how it can be integrated in its formulation.

Design/methodology/approach

This approach is to apply this to the study of power transformers, in which grain‐oriented steel sheets are usually used. In this type of analysis, magnetic characteristics of the steel sheets such as non‐linearity and anisotropy, or even the hysteresis, must be taken into account.

Findings

The Newton‐Raphson method is generally used to solve the system of equations, but it is a CPU‐time‐consuming task, especially when finite element models and circuit equations are coupled and therefore, time is considered in the analysis.

Originality/value

An approach able to deal with different models for anisotropy in the finite element method is presented.

Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to solve an inverse problem of structure recognition arising in eddy current testing (ECT) – type NDT. For this purpose, the space mapping (SM) technique with an extraction based on the Gauss‐Newton algorithm with Tikhonov regularization is applied.

Design/methodology/approach

The aim is to have a computationally fast recognition procedure of defects since the monitoring results in a large amount of data points that need to be analyzed by 3D eddy current model. According to the SM optimization, the finite element method (FEM) is used as a fine model, while the model based on an integral method such as the volume integral method (VIM) serves as a coarse model. This approach, being an example of a two‐level optimization method, allows shifting the optimization load from a time consuming and accurate model to the less precise but faster coarse surrogate.

Findings

The application of this method enables shortening of the evaluation time that is required to provide the proper parameter estimation of surface defects.

Research limitations/implications

In this work only the specific kinds of surface defects were considered. Therefore, the reconstruction of arbitrary shapes of defects when using real measurement data from ECT system can be treated in further research.

Originality/value

The paper investigated the eddy current inverse problem. According to aggressive space mapping method, a suitable coarse model is needed. In this case, for the purpose of 3D defect reconstruction, the reduced VIM approach was applied. From a practical view point, the authors demonstrated that the two‐level inversion procedures allow saving of up to 50 percent CPU time in comparison with the optimization by means of regularized Gauss‐Newton algorithm in the same FE model.

Abstract

Educating students with disabilities in the same classrooms and instructional environments as their natural neighbors and peers (i.e., inclusion) is a promise of significant substance and value for many special educators. When federal legislation mandated that students with disabilities receive a free and appropriate education in least restrictive environments, at least in principle, the schoolhouse doors were opened for all students. In this chapter, we provide a brief historical review of efforts to educate students with disabilities in inclusive environments and provide direction for what we believe are important practices for creating high-quality inclusive learning environments.
