Abstract

Purpose

In the recent past, gamification has been recognized as an effective tool for engaging customers. However, there is limited research to explain luxury consumers' motivations to adopt gamification. This research applies the service-dominant (S-D) logic theory to investigate the association between motivation to adopt gamification, customer engagement, and affective commitment.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through structured questionnaires from a sample of 242 millennial luxury consumers in India. Collected data were examined using AMOS 25 and Process Macro for SPSS.

Findings

The findings reveal that consumers' social and personal integrative motives for gaming positively influence customer engagement with luxury brands. Further, all three sub-dimensions of customer engagement (conscious attention, enthused participation, and social connection) are also found to positively influence affective commitment. Customer engagement fully mediates the association between motivation and affective commitment, while the self-brand connection is found to weaken the mediated relationship.

Originality/value

This study is one of the first studies to explore luxury consumers' motivations behind engaging in gamification through moderated-mediation framework.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the effect of consumers’ gaming motivations on customer–brand engagement and the potential of this engagement to develop self–brand connections and affective commitment toward luxury brands. Second, it explores if the setup game mechanics and self-congruity with the brand can strengthen the effectiveness of motivation to engage with gamification on customer–brand engagement and self-brand connection.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through the survey method using a structured questionnaire. The sample comprised 249 millennial luxury consumers in India. Data analysis was conducted using AMOS 25 and PROCESS Macro for SPSS.

Findings

The findings support the mediating role of customer–brand engagement and self–brand connection in the relationship between motivation to engage with gamification and affective commitment. While setup game mechanics and self-congruity with brand positively moderate the effect of motivation to engage with gamification on affective commitment via self–brand connection, a similar effect is not found for the relationship via customer–brand engagement. This study presents important implications for both marketers and academicians.

Originality/value

This study applies the mechanics–dynamics–emotions framework and social exchange theory to explain gamified services as a cocreation process between consumers and luxury brands, fostering customer engagement, connection and commitment with the brands. It highlights the role of setup game mechanics and self-congruity in strengthening the effect of luxury consumers’ gaming motivations on engagement and connection with the brand.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand the effect of consumers' national identity (NI) on their willingness to buy (WTB) domestic (Indian) products vis-à-vis foreign (Chinese) products. Secondly, it explores the role of psychological ownership (PO) and consumers' animosity in explaining their WTB domestic products.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper data were collected online from Indian consumers (N = 408) through the survey method, using a structured questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS AMOS Version 24 and the PROCESS SPSS macro, using mediations and moderated mediation models.

Findings

This study establishes the positive effect of consumers' NI on their WTB domestic products over Chinese ones. With a long history of hostility between India and China in the backdrop, the authors find a significant mediating role of PO and consumer animosity (CA) in the relationship between NI and WTB . The results also demonstrate that while consumer ethnocentrism (CET) positively moderates the mediating path via PO at all levels from low to high, it moderates the path via CA only at the mean and high levels.

Originality/value

This study applies the Psychological Ownership Theory, Social Identity Theory (SIT) and the Attribution Theory to explore the interplay between consumers' NI, PO , CA and ethnocentrism in the Indian context. The study asserts the distinction between these constructs by analyzing the interaction and inter-relationships between these variables. Further, it provides a comprehensive understanding of Indian consumers' preference for domestic products over Chinese ones.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of in-store private label marketing to impact the attitude of consumers towards private label brands (PLBs) by influencing consumers' perceived quality variations between the PLBs and national brands.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on “Cue utilisation theory” and focusses on how retailers can influence consumers' perception of quality variations by providing them in-store marketing cues. Data was collected through the mall intercept method in New Delhi, India. Data analysis was done using AMOS 25 and the PROCESS SPSS macro.

Findings

This study establishes the effect of in-store private label marketing in improving consumers' quality perception of PLBs vis-à-vis national brands and thereby leading to a positive attitude towards PLBs. Further, the national brand promotions attitude is found to moderate the relationship between private label marketing and attitude towards PLBs. However, contrary to the authors' expectations, it has a positive effect on this relationship. The study found an insignificant moderation influence of price consciousness.

Originality/value

This study complements existing literature on “Cue utilisation theory” by demonstrating the importance of in-store private label marketing in improving consumers' attitudes towards PLBs. It also extends to fill some gaps in the literature by studying the direct, mediating and moderating relationship among in-store private label marketing, perceived quality variations, price consciousness, national brand promotion attitude and attitude towards PLBs, especially in an emerging market such as India.

Abstract

Purpose

The study explores the effect of game flow, game enjoyment and game customization on consumers' attitudes toward the game (ATG). It also examines the relationship between consumers' ATG and attitude toward the in-game advertising (IGA) brand.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used SEM and PROCESS MACRO to analyze the results.

Findings

The study asserts the significant role of game flow, game customization and game enjoyment as antecedents of consumers' ATG. Furthermore, psychological ownership and perceived IGA invasiveness were found to be significant moderators between attitude toward game and attitude for the IGA brand.

Originality/value

The study examines how players’ attitude toward the game influences their attitude toward the IGA brand due to the player's ownership perceptions over the game and invasiveness perceptions for IGA. The study used psychological ownership and psychological reactance theory in the gamification context. The study findings present pertinent implications for game developers and brands interested in using IGA tools.

Abstract

Purpose

Digital disruption has posed challenges to managers. Metaverse is one of the fastest-growing digital transformations (DTs) impacting business across the globe. There needs to be more literature on the academic prospect relating to metaverse. This article aims to analyze and evaluate the publications to highlight themes, opportunities and contemporary challenges of metaverse in business management to get insights about the challenges posed to managers through such transformation.

Design/methodology/approach

Over 74 articles from 2006 to 2022 were collected using the Scopus database. These were further analyzed to understand how previous research captures metaverse in the domain of business management and the amount to which has been studied in terms of publication productivity, country productivity, affiliation productivity and author productivity, Top-cited documents, keywords analysis, network visualization of keywords and bibliometric coupling. The authors also gathered literature related to metaverse in the field of business management and its uses for managers.

Findings

The authors' findings reveal that metaverse in business management has gained momentum in publications since 2022. Approximately 68% of total publications and 56% of total citations were from 2022. USA is the flagbearer of metaverse around the globe and the University of Georgia is leading in affiliation productivity. Network analysis through Vosviewer shows that keywords metaverse and virtual reality (VR) have the highest co-occurrences and link strength.

Originality/value

This article is relevant to those interested in how the world of virtual workspace is making a paradigm shift in management development. This study aims to review previous literary works through bibliometrics and visualization approaches comprehensively. Metaverse is changing the schema of the business world in terms of various strategies that this article addressed. Such studies have not been previously carried out.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the value of internship as a function of the disparity between the initial expectation from the internship and its actual experience. The perceived internship experience has been evaluated through the expectation confirmation theory (ECT).

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 106 students pursuing Master of Business Administration in a business school in India were administered a questionnaire to assess their expectations and experience before and after the internship. The self-designed questionnaire based on review of extant literature on internship included items related to supervisor–intern exchanges, significance of prior classroom academic preparation, prior work experience and perceived learning value. Students’ assessment scores on the internship project were taken as the outcome variable.

Findings

Pre- and post-analysis of perceived internship value indicated a positive expectation disconfirmation. The result indicates that “Positive Expectation Disconfirmation” has a significant direct relationship with overall satisfaction with internship. Structural equation modeling further revealed that perceived quality of the supervisor–intern exchange has a significant relationship with perceived internship value. Perceived significance of classroom academic preparation has a weak negative relationship with both perceived internship value and internship performance. Perceived internship value has a weak positive relationship with internship performance.

Originality/value

It is first time an attempt has been made to look into the issue of internship from the ECT.

Abstract

Purpose

In the current scenario, consumers are looking for the well-known brands having quality which satisfies their needs. Most people value the environment and belief to protect it. They are aware about the environmental problems, but it is not necessary that their purchasing should lie on this basis. There may be a difference between their attitude towards eco-friendly cosmetic products and the purchasing, which lies on some important factors such as product features, price, promotion and convenience to purchase. This paper aims to discuss the relationship between different age, education and income groups of female consumers with the attitude of female consumers towards green cosmetic products. This paper also highlights the purchasing of female consumers towards eco-friendly cosmetic products and the relationship of it with their attitude.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample of 100 female consumers from Delhi region has been taken. Statistics have been used with the help of SPSS. Cluster analysis has used in this paper to group the female respondents according to their attitude towards the green cosmetic products, and factor analysis is used to combine the correlated variables (describing the attitude of female consumers towards green cosmetic products) into factors. Tests such as multivariate test, chi-square test and correlation have applied to find out the objectives.

Findings

It has found that the female consumers having different age and education levels do not have different attitude towards green cosmetic products, but the income level has an impact on it. The women of different income groups are having different attitude towards the pricing and recommendation of green cosmetic products. Second, there is an impact of green cosmetic products on purchasing of female consumers. Third, there is a negative relationship between the attitude and purchasing of female consumers towards green cosmetic products.

Research limitations/implications

In this study, the respondents are taken from Delhi region in India. Future research could consider a larger or different region for different responses. Further, the variables age, education and income level have been considered for this study. For the wider aspect, other demographic and cultural variables such as occupation, gender, marital status and various cultural and sub-cultural variables based on religions can highlight the other way of green marketing effect. Only two dimensions of attitude and purchasing of female consumers were represented. For the further research scope, other dimensions such as consumers’ intentions and perception, availability and price of green cosmetic products could be considered.

Practical implications

The relation between the attitude and purchasing of female consumers are described, which can be helpful for managers for the better understanding of female consumers related with the green cosmetic products and to re-frame the marketing strategies. The low and negative correlation between these two variables can change the existing strategies of managers and can direct the marketers to find out factors which influence this relationship and make effective strategies for positioning green cosmetic products.

Abstract

In the last 10 years, India has amended its laws dealing with sexual offences against women with the changes ranging from increasing terms of imprisonment for the offence of rape to state-funded compensation schemes for women and child victims. In this regard, challenges persist for the agencies of the criminal justice system in India especially the courts to realise the vision of restorative justice as these forums have to navigate the relevant statutory provisions and binding precedents. This chapter seeks to analyse the challenges faced by courts in proper reintegration of victims and offenders of sexual offences, the institutional responses of the courts and suggests reforms to the criminal justice system in India in consonance with the principles of restorative justice acknowledged in the restorative justice movement in the international discourse.
