Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to visualize and map the emerging themes in the field of quality of teaching and learning in higher education.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a bibliometric approach to review studies published between 2000 and 2021. The leading trends in authorship, publications and countries were analyzed using the Web of Science database.

Findings

The analysis reveals four distinct clusters: quality, teaching and learning, supportive environment and learning outcomes. The literature in the field is lop-sided, and many issues still need to be addressed.

Research limitations/implications

While bibliometric analysis has achieved significant recognition among academicians, this study was restricted to the data set provided by Web of Science. In addition, the analysis covers a specific time frame and may not capture recent developments in the field. Future research should address these limitations and consider expanding the sample size and incorporating more diverse methodologies.

Practical implications

The findings have implications for practitioners, policymakers and researchers. Practitioners can benefit from the identified core authors’ work and access evidence-based practices to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in their institutions. Policymakers can use the research findings to inform policymaking processes and develop robust quality assurance frameworks. Researchers can build upon the identified clusters and core authors’ work to address research gaps and advance knowledge in the field.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing literature by providing a comprehensive bibliometric review of the quality of teaching and learning in higher education. Identifying clusters and core authors offers a systematic overview of the significant themes and influential figures within the field. This research provides a foundation for further exploration and understanding of quality in higher education.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the relationship between management support, quality infrastructure, staff training and the effectiveness of quality enhancement cells (QECs) established in higher education institutions.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were acquired via a structured questionnaire dispatched to faculty members across 12 public and private universities, primarily situated in Punjab, Pakistan. Among the 200 questionnaires distributed, 180 were retrieved and 140 were deemed valid. The proposed relationships were examined using SPSS–25 and PLS–SEM.

Findings

The results show a positive and significant relationship between management support, quality infrastructure and staff training with QECs' effectiveness. The study also highlights that the effectiveness of QECs is “Good” in only two of the 12 universities, while in most universities it is “Barely Acceptable”. Furthermore, QECs' effectiveness is slightly better in public universities compared to private institutions.

Research limitations/implications

The study employs convenience sampling and a cross-sectional approach, focusing on faculty members from 12 universities, primarily in Punjab, Pakistan. To enhance future research, larger samples and probability-based sampling should be considered, while involving quality managers and students for a broader perspective.

Practical implications

The research suggests policymakers and university leaders should strengthen their support by providing resources, quality infrastructure and training for academic and administrative staff. This would enhance the effectiveness of QECs and improve the overall quality of education in both public and private universities.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on quality assurance in higher education by emphasizing the significance of QECs concerning management support, quality infrastructure and staff training – areas that are often overlooked in Pakistani universities.

Abstract

Purpose

The potential role of higher education institutes is indispensable for realizing the dream of a sustainable future. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of knowledge-oriented leadership on the sustainable service quality of higher education institutes. Furthermore, it also investigates the mediating role of organizational innovation and psychological empowerment.

Design/methodology/approach

Data of this study is collected from 306 faculty members of the public and private universities of Pakistan. Structural equation modeling technique was used for data analysis and testing of hypotheses.

Findings

The results demonstrate the positive impact of knowledge-oriented leadership on sustainable service quality. Organizational innovation and psychological empowerment partially mediate the relationship of knowledge-oriented leadership and sustainable service quality.

Practical implications

The policymakers including the higher education commission of Pakistan and university administration are highly recommended to promote a knowledge-oriented leadership style in the higher education institutes to improve innovation and psychological empowerment at the workplace which leads to foster sustainable service quality.

Originality/value

The concept of sustainable service quality in higher education institutes is in the infancy stages in developing countries. There is a dearth of studies that explore the relationship between knowledge management enabler and sustainable service quality. This study attempts to explore the unexplored relationship and extends the literature of higher education institutes and sustainable service quality.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper provides a step-by-step guide in the guise of a roadmap for service improvement initiatives using importance performance map analysis (IPMA).

Design/methodology/approach

To empirically illustrate how IPMA can be applied to any service industry, three sectors are considered; sports and fitness (study A), hospitality (study B) and higher education (study C). Following the proper selection of measuring instruments and their evaluation using structural equation modeling-partial least squares (Smart-PLS), IPMA is applied to identify those attributes having strong total effects (high importance) over the targeted construct (satisfaction) but which also have low average latent variable scores (low performance).

Findings

For sports and fitness (study A), the physical aspects and programme quality require managerial attention. For the hospitability sector (study B), it is service commitment, interaction quality and internal sense of happiness. Whereas for higher education (study C), it is administrative quality as well as the element of transformative quality, namely the university’s role in adding to its students’ emotional stability, which needs the attention of the top management.

Originality/value

This study provides researchers and practitioners with a roadmap for applying PLS-SEM and IPMA for continuous service quality improvement. The roadmap extends upon Ringle and Sarstedt’s (2016) work. It highlights critical decisions that need to be considered in the pre-analytical stages of the IPMA application, i.e. at the research design phase in selecting the most appropriate service quality measurement model specifications. It not only contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing empirical evidence to advance theory development in the quality management field but also has implications for the practitioners in any service sector on where to focus their attention for an effective service improvement.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the influence of academic service quality on student satisfaction and loyalty, based on a study at Higher Education Legal Entities (HELE) in Indonesia. HELE is a policy in higher education that empowers these institutions to become autonomous in management. Academic service quality (ASQ) is an essential aspect of fostering the satisfaction and loyalty of students.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses the descriptive quantitative and regressive survey approach to examine the influence of academic service quality on student satisfaction and loyalty. The population in this study encompassed all students from HELE. Meanwhile, 750 students were purposefully selected from 16 HELE in Indonesia. Data were collected using validated and reliable questionnaires. The garnered data were analyzed using a structural equation model through Smart PLS 3.

Findings

This study finds that (1) there is a significant direct influence of academic service quality on student satisfaction in HELE, (2) there is a reasonably direct influence of student satisfaction on student loyalty in HELE. (3) ASQ of HELE has a feeble direct influence on student loyalty and (4) there is a moderate indirect impact of academic service quality on student loyalty, mediated by student satisfaction at HELE in Indonesia.

Research limitations/implications

The research was conducted across 16 HELEs in Indonesia. Many other universities do services and of course impact on satisfaction and loyalty for students, but are not included in this research. Besides that, other aspects are not included in this research either. Based on that condition, this result cannot cover all aspects of others in all universities in Indonesia.

Practical implications

The practical implication of this study’s results for the leaders of HELES is to commit to student-centered, service-oriented tactics and actions for establishing student loyalty. Besides, these institutions must prioritize developing and maintaining profitable customer relationships in this changing world and offer an agenda for the future research.

Social implications

The social implication will be indicated by higher universities to always improve the service quality of academics, with continuous improvement in the future. It has to do with every university so that student satisfaction improves, and student loyalty improves too. Exiting HELE in the future depends on the variables of service quality for stakeholders in the community around. If the community gets satisfaction, in the future, they will be back to support the HELE in the future.

Originality/value

The results of this study are original and novel, and strengthen the findings of previous research that there is an effect of academic service quality on student satisfaction. It confirms the effects of satisfaction on loyalty, along with the effects of academic service quality on loyalty mediated by satisfaction. These results rejected previous results that there are effects of academic service quality on student loyalty in HELE as organizations.

Abstract

For education systems to meet the demands of the knowledge economy and prepare their students to be adequately skilled for a more diversified economy in the Arabian Gulf, bold and innovative initiatives must be taken in order to ensure that these skills contribute towards a sustainable knowledge economy. Gulf states have been preparing for a transition towards, what the World Bank calls ‘a knowledge economy’ (World Bank, 2013) where economies will be run by the skills and knowledge capital of their workforce with technology and its advancement playing a central role. Many governments have identified the education sector as a site in which such ambitions can be met and have therefore introduced models of education where English is the medium of instruction. The rationale behind such a decision is based on multiple reasons, mainly because English is considered by some as the language of science and discovery (see Crystal, 2003).

In all discussions surrounding the overhaul of education systems and the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) namely, goal number four (quality education), the notion of the language through which students learn is a neglected area of inquiry. English is increasingly becoming the language of instruction at the university and progressively at the school level too. This means that young students lose out on adequately learning their mother tongue. The chapter argues that only through forward, bold, and novel decisions to teach students in both Arabic and English can there be a guarantee of a more sustainable knowledge economy across the Gulf.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine the perception of graduates from teaching degree programs in Early Childhood and Primary Education carried out in Spain in accordance with the European Higher Education Area, who are currently working in classrooms, on their initial training in the educational treatment of diversity (ETD). In addition, potential differences were examined based on the teaching degree that was studied (Early Childhood or Primary).

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a mixed methodology including an ad hoc questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. Participants were 140 working teachers who had previously earned their degree in Early Childhood or Primary Education programs. Data analysis was carried out from an integrative perspective, using a basic descriptive focus and content analysis.

Findings

The results reveal that the new teachers considered that their initial training in the area of ETD was not as extensive as it should have been and as required by their daily teaching needs. They felt that they had acquired better education in the theoretical content as compared to the practical component. They mentioned a lack of training to attend to students entering the system at a later stage as well as for those with high intellectual abilities, noting that the initial training in ETD focused excessively on deficits and not enough on potentialities and other student diversities.

Originality/value

This study may be useful as it offers an improved adaptation to the reality of early education in ETD classrooms of future teachers, both for the competent education administrations and universities. It may also serve as a starting point to adjust the permanent training offer for teachers to their specific needs, making up for the deficiencies of their initial training.

Abstract

Purpose

Preservice teacher (PST) professional development programs are crucial for cultivating high-quality STEAM teachers of the future, significantly impacting the quality of regional STEAM education. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, as a region of cross-border cooperation, integrates the resources and advantages of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, possessing rich cultural heritage and innovative capabilities. Transdisciplinary Education for Cultural Inheritance (C-STEAM) is an effective approach to promoting educational collaboration within the Greater Bay Area, facilitating the integration of both technological and humanities education. This study aims to develop a Technology-Enabled University-School-Enterprise (T-USE) collaborative education model and implement it in the Greater Bay Area, to explore its role as a support mechanism in professional development and its impact on C-STEAM PSTs' professional capital.

Design/methodology/approach

Adopting a qualitative methodology, the study interviewed PSTs who participated in a C-STEAM teacher education course under the T-USE model. Thematic coding is used to analyze their knowledge acquisition, interaction benefits with community members, and autonomous thinking and decision-making in theoretical learning and teaching practice.

Findings

The findings show that the T-USE model significantly enhanced the PSTs' human capital, including teaching beliefs, knowledge, and skills. In terms of social capital, PSTs benefited from collaboration with PST groups, university teaching teams, in-service teachers, and enterprises, though challenges such as varying levels of expertise among in-service teachers and occasional technical instability emerged. For decisional capital, the T-USE model provided opportunities for autonomous thinking and promoted teaching judgment skills through real teaching challenges and scenarios. Reflective practice activities also supported PSTs' professional growth.

Originality/value

This study reveals the effectiveness and internal mechanism of the T-USE model in C-STEAM PST training, offering significant theoretical and practical references for future PST education.

As institutions acknowledge the importance of adopting digital transformation, the higher education setting is realising a prompt and transformative change internationally. This chapter explores the effect of digitalisation in the sphere of higher education, whilst underlining its significance for Kuwait. By adopting digital transformation, higher education institutions in Kuwait can facilitate robust sustainable development and adopt a culture of bold innovation. The objective of Kuwait Vision 2035 is to make use of digital transformation as an approach to enhance the overall quality of education. This may include incorporating advanced teaching methods, a modified curriculum, and innovative evaluation methods supported by technology. Digital tools can enhance the learning experience and provide students with a more interactive and engaging education. By capitalising on digital infrastructure, aiding teachers, and encouraging partnerships, Kuwait aims to prepare students with useful digital skills, advance innovation and stimulate progress in a knowledge-based economy. Likewise, by means of extensive and lifelong learning, Kuwait intends to be at the forefront of digital education by making a sizeable contribution to economic prosperity and sustainable development.
